Hello and welcome to this half hour dose of weekly Jewish spirituality. Jews have a tradition of praying three times a day, and at Mishkan we have a daily virtual minyan at 8 a.m. central to get your day started. Folks join us from across the country and across the world as we begin each day with words and songs of gratitude, inspiration, healing, and Torah.

Without further ado, I invite you to breathe a little deeper, connect a little more with yourself, with God, with Torah, with this community, and with the world around you, wherever you are, whatever your time zone. All right. Just like Noah and Violet did a moment ago, I'm going to take my tallit, and I invite you to just take a moment to sit up a little straighter.
00:00:45:21 - 00:01:10:07
Unknown
Close your eyes, take a few deep breaths. Become present and centered in the space that you're in, becoming aware of the connection of your body and your breath to the world around you, to the trees and to the sky and to the air around your home, or wherever it is that you're sitting or listening to this.
00:01:10:09 - 00:01:16:06
Unknown
All right, Baruch and I share.
00:01:16:08 - 00:01:45:22
Unknown
Vegetative heat and just take a few moments to appreciate being held in life and in a weakness and awareness for so much greater than any one of us, but who cares so much about each one of us? Oh, no. I connected Tallis to earring. All right. Wait. Before I start, I have to show you something. So one of the things I'm.
00:01:46:02 - 00:02:13:10
Unknown
I do when I'm in, you might know I was in Israel for three and a half weeks, and I was in Germany for three days, so, like, I was gone for a full month. And boy, did I miss my life in Chicago. And it was also wonderful. And one of the things that makes traveling wonderful is shopping. And so when you go to the Old City in Jerusalem, there, it's just like storefront after storefront after storefront after storefront of vendors.
00:02:13:10 - 00:02:27:13
Unknown
And there's the Jewish Quarter and the Armenian Quarter and the Muslim Quarter and the Christian Quarter. And on the surface, a lot of these shops appear to have the exact same stuff. You know, it's just like anywhere you go in the world where you, you know, there are lots of vendors and they're all kind of selling the same thing.
00:02:27:13 - 00:02:54:11
Unknown
But if you scratch the surface and you go into a store, it turns out like actually each one has its own character. And it turns out this one actually makes the jewelry, and this one makes the jewelry and sells it to these guys, and they all work together. And so given that I'm staying for the most part in West Jerusalem and doing things that are, you know, primarily Jewish, I always make it a point to go into the Armenian and Muslim quarters to spend money and support the economy of Palestinians living in Jerusalem.
00:02:54:11 - 00:03:17:21
Unknown
And so these pomegranate earrings, I don't know if you can see them, but we're made by a particular vendor and I think. Thank you. Wait. Hang on. I'm not done. Look at this. Look at this little one. It's a pomegranate that actually has little red. It's not rubies, but I love the face you just made. Merida. Isn't that pretty?
00:03:17:23 - 00:03:39:13
Unknown
Anyway, so these. These are my new pomegranate. My new pomegranate things from. And now I'm so embarrassed that I can't remember the guy's name, but I'll get his business card and I'll tell you, because the next time we do a trip, like we're going to this guy's store. And it was one of those stories that was like he, you know, he was in he was in the shop over here.
00:03:39:15 - 00:03:55:16
Unknown
This is I'm going off script. This was not my plan this morning to tell you about my shopping adventures in Jerusalem. But he takes me into his store and he says, you know, I want to show you the beautiful shop that I made. And I'm like, aren't we in it? And he's like, no, no, no. It's across the way.
00:03:55:18 - 00:04:21:09
Unknown
He says, I was building this beautiful space and I finished it like I was working on it all, all year, all year. And I finished it on October 5th, 2023. This. And it was this beautiful. He built out this gorgeous open vaulted space. He built a second floor on the first floor. He had jewelry as display cases. He has Judaica.
00:04:21:11 - 00:04:43:06
Unknown
And on the second floor he had rugs, you know, Persian rugs and different kinds of, like Moroccan whatever, like beautiful space. And it basically sat empty for a year and a half before tourism started, even just a little bit picking up. And he was so proud, you know, it was like he had poured every dollar of his life savings into creating this beautiful space.
00:04:43:07 - 00:04:58:22
Unknown
You know, and there are so many stories just like this guy. Anyway, I just thought to myself, like, the next time we're doing a trip, you know, anytime you do a trip, you have to pick which stores and which things you're going to feature. I'm going to bring people back to this place. But anyway, in the meantime, I wear his jewelry.

I want to invite us to gather the four corners of our seat. And the four corners of all of the places our consciousness may be this morning. I'm thinking of the four corners of the earth that I've spent the last weekend. From Israel to Germany, back to Chicago. I guess that's only three corners. I don't know what the fourth corner is.
00:09:46:15 - 00:10:26:19

Metaphor, all of you. But take take a moment to just think about all of the all of the reasons why you might not be feeling the oneness of the ultimate presence, guiding and supporting the universe this morning, and know that we hold all of those contradictions together in love. Like all these fringes that we hold in love. I don't know, folks actually want to even share this morning anything that feels like those, like a contradiction that's getting in the way of, you know, that integration, that feeling of seamless integration with the oneness of the universe.
00:10:26:23 - 00:10:43:08

You don't have to tell us your whole life story, but if there's anything that's on your mind this morning, you can drop it in the chat if you want or just know, yeah, it's all there and it's all real. Ricky. Yeah. You're not the only one. You're not the only one I know is working with something like that.

Sending a lot of healing energy to them. We'll do the healing prayer in a moment. Yeah, pain sure can get in the way. Yeah. Blair on going, I know. Mysterious fuzziness from Violet. Oh, fussiness. Politics. Making, caring for real people harder. That. Isn't that the truth said by a doctor who's trying to just take care of people at every age? And so we don't say God's not part of any of it. You know, God is the strength that we need to help get through all of it. And so we just take these disparate threads and all these contradictions and everything that gets in the way, and we don't push it away.

We do so much creative interpreting of the prayers. And then there's this line that's like. And you will teach them to your children. And then it's like, oh, God, the literalist. The literal ness of that moment right now in my life feels very present, which is great. All right. We're going to go into Misha right now. I'm going to do this.

Let's look at Birkenau, Amazon. We're in a cave and we're in the middle of the parsha. As as you know, we are in the section of Torah where Moses is basically giving over his ethical will to the Jewish people. If you haven't heard that phrase before, you know what a will is. You know, it's like I leave, you know, my favorite purple socks to my daughter.
00:18:35:17 - 00:19:08:06
Unknown
Idiot. I leave my, you know, my my Talis to my son Judah, my favorite earrings. Okay, whatever. That's that's stuff to me. Okay, dear. Doesn't want my favorite purple socks. An okay. An ethical will is actually, in many ways more important. It's a statement of what I want to leave behind, of who I am, not what I have, but who I am, what of my values, what of my stories, what of what I have lived and learned in this world?
00:19:08:06 - 00:19:30:11
Unknown
Do I want the next generation to know? Do I want my children to take with me, to take with them when I am gone? This is what Moses is doing with the Jewish people in the entire book of Deuteronomy. He's giving over his ethical will, his you know what I have lived, what I have learned, what I have learned from God, the creator of the universe, who is going to be following you, with you as you go on.
00:19:30:11 - 00:19:53:17
Unknown
And I don't go with you. And so that's basically the entire book. And it's interesting because some of his memories of things that have happened in the past don't actually, you know, are a little bit different from what we saw happen in earlier sections of the Torah. But here we have Moses saying, and this is a theme throughout the book, therefore keep the commandments of the eternal your God.
00:19:53:18 - 00:19:59:07
Unknown
Walk in God's ways and show reverence.
00:19:59:09 - 00:20:29:23
Unknown
Otto, you know, have reverence before God. He Adonai aka aka LRH Tova, natural mime, the Eternals bringing you into a good land, a land with streams of water and springs and fountains issuing from plane and hill. A land of wheat and barley, figs and vines and pomegranates. A land of olive trees and honey. A land where you may eat food without stint, where you will lack nothing.
00:20:30:02 - 00:20:56:10
Unknown
A land whose rocks are iron, and from whose hills you will mine copper. And here's what I wanted to talk about. The eternal Tova. Natalya, when you have eaten your film, give thanks to the eternal, your God, for the good land given to you. Take care lest you forget the eternal, your God, and fail to keep these commandments, rules and laws that I enjoin on you today.
00:20:56:10 - 00:21:28:22
Unknown
So what the rabbis of the tradition take from this line the heart of A is you should eat, and you should be satisfied, and you should give thanks. That's what it says about three verbs in that order eat, feel satisfied, give thanks. And so, you know, we do have a practice of blessing before the meal too. And that comes actually from well, if we bless before reading Torah, surely we should bless before eating a meal.
00:21:28:22 - 00:21:52:16
Unknown
Okay, but the actual Torah commandment is to bless after the meal, to say like a good hearty thank you to God and to the creators of the food that we're eating after we've eaten it. Anybody have any comments about this? Just to say that it's also after we feel satisfied. So we should we know this, our feeling of of having taken the food in and how that feels to us.
00:21:52:19 - 00:22:23:22
Unknown
Yes. Like satiation. Like how? Right for a while. Great, sweetie. Blue Cross Blue Shield sent me and Henry a you know, a eating Mindfully program, you know, and the whole I mean, it was a weight loss program, but the whole the whole theory of the program was mindfulness. It was exactly what you're talking about, Admiral. It was like, don't eat so quickly that you don't notice what's happening in your body, in your feelings as you're eating.
00:22:23:22 - 00:22:48:18
Unknown
And when you notice that you're no longer hungry, stop eating. Like when you're feeling satisfied that, you know, big revelation. Okay. What else? I always think it's fascinating how the rabbis take one word, you know, and you should bless and make it, you know, 20 minute benching. So yes, I know expansion of the simple concept into a much more complicated ritual.
00:22:48:21 - 00:23:06:14
Unknown
Oh my God. Yes. And you know, we're not going to have time right now to do the whole thing. Even if we did it at 3.5 speed, it would still take like it would still take five minutes if we did it on, you know, super, super speed. But to do it sitting around a table after a meal, yeah, it takes like literally 15 minutes.
00:23:06:15 - 00:23:33:20
Unknown
All right. Great. So Melanie asks what if circumstances prevent one from feeling satisfied. Lack of money, resources, illness. Melanie, what's interesting is actually there are different blessings for having eaten different amounts and kinds of food. So what ends up being birkat homophone? The you know that longer blessing of satiation only ends up being for meals involving bread. But Melanie, I mean, that's a whole different and very important conversation.
00:23:33:20 - 00:23:55:08
Unknown
I don't say the rule of no cell phones at the table. Yeah, I know that's in the Talmud exploration on the, you know, on the toe reverse focusing on enough. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So I mean, I just think this is so powerful. Jerry Seinfeld has like a whole bit that he does about like, why why do we pay the bill after the meal?
00:23:55:09 - 00:24:20:10
Unknown
Because like the time when you're hungry, when you actually want to pay for it is before the meal and then after the meal, you're like, who ordered all this food? Got $100 of food. You know, like, I'm not hungry. But it's like, yes, exactly. In that moment is when you say to the creator of the plants and the animals that made it possible for the humans to gather and prepare and cook and whatever the food that you just ate.
00:24:20:11 - 00:24:46:10
Unknown
Thank you. This was extraordinary. Most people blessed before, but not after. I know Ricky, and I think it's just it's interesting. There's a real connection made here in the Torah between having between, like having abundance. Really. Like having a home, having food and forgetting, like forgetting the source of where it comes from, getting spiritually lazy. It's like a danger that comes with affluence, is becoming entitled and spiritually lazy.
00:24:46:10 - 00:25:03:19
Unknown
And the tour is like, I don't want to see my people do that. Rebecca. Yeah, it ties us to the world, the land and the animals and the people who brought this bounty to us. Yes. We're not going to have time, really to get into this, sadly. Because. Because this as long as Shoshanna said. And we want to say Kaddish in a moment and I have to take my daughter to camp.
00:25:03:19 - 00:25:23:08
Unknown
So sadly, I can't stay on a chat afterwards as much as I want to. But just to see this first blessing here in Birkat Zone really is a response to that line in the Torah. And it's about the the bounty of the earth and the goodness God provides on the land. I just so I'm just going to read it in English here.
00:25:23:09 - 00:25:47:07

Blessed are you, Lord our God, sovereign of the universe, who in your goodness provides sustenance for the entire world with grace, with kindness, with mercy. God gives food to all flesh. Kindness to everything. Through God's greatness to us continuously. We lack for nothing and we not. And we don't lack food. And for the sake of God's great name, God's benevolence provides nourishment and sustenance for all does good to all.

You sustain for all. And so, Meredith, thank you for saying that we do have enough for everyone. We just don't distribute it for reasons of greed and power and fear of not having enough. Yeah. So this idea, I mean, Meredith brought a one, Meredith brought it up at the top and other Meredith is sort of responding down here that like, there's this feeling of the injustice of knowing it is not fair.

Actually, people in the world don't have what they need. And one response is like, that's actually not God's fault. We as a human race and, you know, we United States of America is the wealthiest country in the world. We could do better figuring out how to distribute God's blessings in this world. And so as much as this is a gratitude, this is also kind of an exhortation, a an invitation and admonishment to anybody with the power to provide food and become part of God's hands, delivering to all.

Next week on Wednesday, after minyan at 830 will be hosting Rabbi Simha Bob, who just wrote a book called like Where Did Judaism Come From? And it's kind of a book about the proto religions and alphabets that gave rise to, you know, Biblical Hebrew and the creation of the Bible's stories and creation. And I think with a focus on the books of Ezra and Nehemiah.

Some future Wednesday when we don't have when we don't have a guest afterwards, I will. I would love to share with you this wild trip I took to Brule, Germany, where I discovered layers upon layers of family members and stories through the meticulously kept archives of this small German town where I learned about my my ancestors. And, you know, that might be both interesting, just on its own, but also as an invitation to you for exploring your own, you know, background or stories that you might not have realized somebody else was keeping track of.
